Altocumulus volutus (Ac vol)

Diese Altocumulus-Art beschreibt den rollenförmigen Ac, der in sehr seltenen Fällen auftritt, und bei dem sich die Wolke als meist einzelne, horizontal entwickelte Linie oder Rolle zeigt. Sie ist dabei nicht mit anderen Wolkenschichten darüber oder darunter verbunden. Weiter scheint sich diese Wolkenlinie oder -rolle allmählich um die eigene Achse zu drehen.

Im Gegensatz zu den viel häufigeren Stratocumulus volutus ist Altocumulus volutus ein sehr seltenes Ereignis. Die Wolkenrolle entsteht in der Regel an der Vorderfront einer voranschreitenden Luftwelle im mittleren Wolkenstockwerk, wobei Ac volutus auch mit anderen Ac-Arten auftreten kann.

Altocumulus volutus wurde in der Wolkenklassifikation bislang nicht gesondert berücksichtigt. Da die Rollenform dieser Wolken jedoch auffallend ist und diese nur unter bestimmten Bedingungen bei bestimmten Wolkengattungen (Sc, Ac) auftritt, wird sie seit Herausgabe des neuen Wolkenatlas der WMO (2017) als neue eigenständige Altocumulus-Art in die Wolkenklassifikation aufgenommen, und zwar eben mit der Bezeichnung Altocumulus volutus.

Das folgende Bild zeigt Altocumulus volutus unterhalb einer heranziehenden Schicht aus Ac opacus. Die Wolkenrolle sowie die vordere Begrenzung des Ac-Feldes markieren hier den Vorderrand einer Kaltfrontokklusion.

This species describes the tube-shaped Ac, which occurs in very rare cases and typically appears as a single, horizontally extending line or roll. It is not connected to other cloud layers above or below it. Furthermore, this cloud line appears to roll about a horizontal axis.

Unlike the much more common Stratocumulus volutus, Altocumulus volutus is a very rare phenomenon. This tube-shaped cloud typically forms at the leading edge of an advancing air wave in the middle cloud layer, although Ac volutus can also occur alongside other species of Ac.

Altocumulus volutus has not been classified separately to date. However, because the tube-shaped appearance of these clouds is distinctive and occurs only under certain conditions in specific cloud genera (Sc, Ac), it has been included in the cloud classification as a new, distinct species of Altocumulus since the publication of the new WMO Cloud Atlas (2017), specifically under the designation Altocumulus volutus.
